It should be noted that the role of freight road transport in the unified transportation system is decisive, since it accounts for the major share of domestic freight turnover, and the efficiency of its operation directly depends on the balance be-tween costs and productivity. The economic efficiency of vehicle operation is mainly evaluated by the mileage utilization coefficient, the technical readiness of motor vehicles (MV), and their fuel efficiency. The article discusses issues related to the evaluation of the operational efficiency of road transport based on specific energy indicators. A method for the comparative assessment of vehicles of different classes and types equipped with various engine types according to the specific energy costs of the transportation process is proposed. The evaluation criteria include the energy equivalent of the consumed fuel, the specific self-propulsion energy of the vehicle, and the energy efficiency coefficient. A system of specific indicators expressed in MJ/(t·km) has been developed, making it possible to compare vehicles regardless of their mass and design characteristics. A comparative analysis of 212 domestically and foreign-produced freight vehicles with carburetor and diesel engines was carried out. It was established that the specific self-propulsion energy of vehicles has simi-lar values for different types of rolling stock, whereas vehicles equipped with diesel engines and having higher load capacity are characterized by lower specific energy consumption and higher energy efficiency. The proposed approach can be used in the selection of rolling stock and in assessing the energy efficiency of freight transportation.
