This paper explores the rationale for selecting the optimal location for installing a small hydroelectric power plant (SHPP) on an irrigation canal. General technical parameters for SHPPs installed at over one hundred irrigation facilities in the republic are presented. A calculation of the water flow rate in an irrigation canal is presented, depending on the flow velocity. Flow velocity distributions are shown depending on the shape of the irrigation structure. The choice of SHPP turbine installation location within the irrigation canal is substantiated. It is demonstrated that optimal installation enables maximum turbine power to be achieved by reducing the drag force exerted by rotating blades against the flow. A design for a small HPP developed for installation in irrigation canals is presented. The principle of interaction between the turbine blades and the water flow is described in detail. The paper is considered in relation to the conditions of the Republic of Tajikistan.

Keywords: irrigation structures, canal, small hydroelectric power plants, flow velocity, flow velocity distributions depending on the shape of the canal.
